Effect of boswellia (Boswellia serrata L.) supplementation on glycemic markers and lipid profile in type II diabetic patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Boswellia serrata is a tree found in India, North Africa and the Middle East. The gum resin from Boswellia has been used extensively in traditional and ayurvedic medicine to treat a variety of conditions. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effect of Boswellia on type II diabetic patients and their glycemic markers and lipid profile.
This review included a total of five studies with a total of 287 patients with type II diabetes. The results found that Boswellia significantly reduced hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL in type II diabetic patients compared to the placebo group. Fasting blood glucose was also reduced in the Boswellia groups, but it was not significant. Therefore, it was concluded that Boswellia supplementation ranging from 500mg to 1200mg per day, has the potential to improve glycemic markers and lipid profiles in patients with type II diabetes.
